Local Activities

Within and around the Mosgiel area can be found a number of outdoor activities and attractions. You can ride the Taieri Gorge Railway, starting either at the stunning Dunedin Railway Station or catching it from Wingatui. If chasing the elusive 'hole in one' is your scene, there are four golf courses in the immediate area who welcome day guests. Being relatively flat in terrain, road cycling is popular in the area: why not join up with the Otago Rail Trail cycling track? The velodrome is a few kilometres down the road for the circuit pedal-pushers.

The A&P Showgrounds are nearby, hosting equestrian, vintage car and aeroplane shows and rural fairs. You could spend the day horse trekking on a rural or coastal trail, or for those who prefer to watch the horses, Wingatui Racecourse is just a few kilometres out of Mosgiel.

Lake Waihola and the picturesque Taieri River are nearby for sailing, jet boating, kayaking and fly-fishing, and there are many bush and stream walking tracks in the area.

In Dunedin the attractions include many museums, art galleries and cafes. The cathedrals, university and commercial buildings are a delight for those who admire structure, form and early New Zealand architecture.

For those who are interested in the supernatural there are ghost tours, or you can try spotting the resident ghost at Larnoch Castle. Those who enjoy the more gastronomical attractions will enjoy the Speight's Brewery tour and restaurant, Cadbury World and the farmers' market (held on Saturday mornings). A brisk walk up Baldwin Street, the steepest street in the world, will work off the extra calories, so go ahead and indulge.

The Botanic Gardens and soon-to-open Chinese Garden, along with other civic and private garden walks are beautiful in all seasons, with riots of colour during the Rhododendron Festival in October and the autumn trees as the seasons change.

The Otago Peninsula boasts spectacular scenery and wildlife including albatrosses, yellow-eyed penguins, seals and sea-lions.
